// Model Y beats utes to top of market

Tesla’s Model Y beat every other passenger and commercial model in September’s new vehicle registrations, and was just seven units short from beating the total Toyota passenger car haul for the month.

// Mixed fortunes for commercials

Monthly activity in the new market suffers year-on-year dip but used sector records surge in sales. There were 4,278 new commercials registered last month, which was down by 7.7 per cent when compared with 4,633 in September 2021.

The total number of used car registrations remained steady in September 2022, according to preliminary data received from the Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

// Electric car tops new sales

Year-to-date figures for the whole new-vehicle market rise despite a fall in registrations last month. There were 10,603 new passenger vehicles registered in September, which was down by 10.5 percent from 11,850 in the same month of last year.

// Used-car market steady

Toyota and Mazda share all top-five spots for model registrations in September. There were 7,375 used-imported cars registered last month. That was down by 0.7 percent compared with 7,426 in September 2021 to bring the year-to-date total to 89,512.
